Gift Guide: Rustic

Emily_Henderson_Rustic_Gift_Guide

It’s time for our second installment of gift guides for all style sensibilities. Each category of gift guides has been chosen from the super scientific Style Diagnostic test results in the coveted STYLED book (available in stores and online now, just in time for the holidays). Based on a number of highly accurate algorithms, we’ve found a way to categorize (pretty much) all humans into 12 style categories. Today we attempt to analyze our rustic friends with a nice little roundup of items that any cozy-loving, wood-chopping, hearth-stoking romantic would swoon over.

But first, some inspiration:

ryan-gosling-dog-george

Plaid, fire, things that involve working with your hands (i.e. foraging for food, building said fires, making out, etc.). Got it? And Ryan Gosling.

Ye rustic folk live for washed linens, wild flowers, cast iron, and worn materials. A rustic home is always cozy, laid back, warm, lived in, and comfortable, so it’s likely our rustic friends often end up being the go-to hosts for holiday parties and house guests. Rustic people have an appreciation for the little things in life, like cooking a hearty meal with loved ones helping out in the kitchen, or getting cozy by the fire with a cuddle buddy. Rustics know how to make a house a home, and those around them feel comfortable.

Even Ryan Gosling thinks your rustic pies are so comforting, he can’t help but be goofy with you.

So, pull up your favorite rickety windsor chair to your reclaimed wood table, and dig into this hearty helping of Rustic Roundup: Our favorite cozy housewares, rugged accessories, and generally functional items, perfect for your favorite rustic.

Zen or Contemporary. I fell right on the line between these two, and yup…Zen Contemporary, or Contemporary Zen, is my thing!

I’d love to see one for Zen!

I’m all over the place with the quiz; I think that lands me in the traditional category–but I embrace weird, so bring it!

Also, I need a hint (i.e. a page number or at least chapter) for the one thing no one should put on their coffee table.

    Merry merry!

    Traditional!!!

I feel like it’s the style you touch on least, so it would be a nice change of pace from the more mid-century-inspired style diagnostics.

I have to say, when I took the quiz and landed in the Traditional camp (borderline Rustic and Traditional), I thought about slitting my wrists. (Traditional makes me think of dark wood furniture and stuffy rooms you’d see in the White House.) But after reading your description and style profile, I realized that it was pretty spot on with how I decorate, (with hints of rustic thrown in for good measure).

    Anyway, traditional, please!

Actually the rooms in the White House were beyond beautiful, worth a visit for sure!

LOL. The closest I’ve come is Fitz’s Oval Office on Scandal. Not my cup of tea!

Ugh, I so love that chair from Anthro! I can make it work anywhere, in any style. I don’t know if it’s comfortable… but it is certainly manly sexy.

  17. Sara says:
    December 10, 2015 at 12:03 pm

    Traditional!!

Anyone who’s ever read your blog already has links to items from virtually every other category in the diagnostic, so it’s time for traditional to get some love. (Pretty please?)

  18. Kasia says:
    December 10, 2015 at 1:25 pm

Nice selection, very suitable for a rustic taste. And for the floor I would go for a rugged and simple flat weave rug: http://bit.ly/1lyqhVG

  19. Joy says:
    December 10, 2015 at 2:30 pm

Wow, I like this more than I thought I would have! It actually describes our home’s aesthetic more than what I would want (I like more of a Scandinavian look). The only thing with rustic is I think it lends itself so much to Fall and Winter, but not so much to Spring and Summer. How do you lighten it up in the warmer months?

  20. jade says:
    December 10, 2015 at 3:01 pm

    Bohemian! Bohemian! Bohemian! please 🙂

  21. Stacy says:

Love this theme a lot! 😀

  22. Holey says:

I’m really disappointed that you still haven’t acknowledged that the style diagnostic in the book is totally messed up. And now you’re calling it “super scientific” and “highly accurate.” I guess I won’t make the mistake of buying any other Emily Henderson products in the future.

    1. Kate Lim says:
      December 10, 2015 at 10:17 pm

I realized some of those choices are messed up like no.5 should be choice no.6 in terms of styles (less to more ornate). I don’t know how accurate that makes the quiz. I got Zen first then weeks later I did the quiz and got Minimalist.

      1. Holey says:
        December 11, 2015 at 8:39 am

Yes, another issue is that it’s impossible to get Traditional, and nearly impossible to get MCM or Rustic (you would have to answer all Fs in the first part or the second part, respectively).

I know that mistakes happen. I just wish that, if Emily is actively promoting her book, she would also say something like, “We realized the scoring is messed up in the first edition, and I’m so sorry! For those of you who have already bought the book, here is a corrected scoring system.”

        1. Alicia says:
          December 11, 2015 at 9:44 am

I took the quiz three times and got traditional twice and rustic once (both of which I identify with and see throughout my home). So, it can happen, I promise!

I think the important thing about the quiz is to help you find a foundation for your style. You’re not bound to one style, and you can have fun mixing different styles. The style wheel was super helpful, I think! And it helped confirm that I was on the right path with my style.

I’m sorry the quiz didn’t work for you. That sucks! But it looks like it worked for a lot of other people, so maybe it’s not a one-size-fits-all thing. But! You can always read through the styles and see which resonates with you, and then move on to the other sections and learn how to streamline your style.

I wish you ladies the best of luck cultivating your style! I’m sure whatever you do will be fabulous. 🙂

          1. Holey says:
            December 18, 2015 at 7:51 am

I do appreciate your kind response. 🙂 But I disagree…

If you got Traditional, then you were not following the instructions correctly (you may have answered all 20 questions instead of just the second set of 10).

This isn’t actually a situation where the quiz just wasn’t some people’s cup of tea. It’s a huge editing fiasco. For example, while Rustic is the second-to-last entry in the list of styles, all the Rustic options in the quiz are As, which are supposedly 6 points each (should be 7). If you were to answer A for each of these, your score would be 60, which would place you in MCM.

            Do these answers sound MCM?
            -Restored 1951 Ford pickup
            -A natural cowhide rug
            -A walk around the lakeside
-Rosalyn Rosenfeld’s bold ranchouse in American Hustle
-An antler set that you can’t wait to hang on your wall
-A tall potted cactus that looks plucked off a ranch
-A soft off-white beige or linen weave
-A collection of oil paintings – all landscapes of quiet countrysides

This is just one of many examples where the answers are switched completely out of order.

Emily usually seems so transparent about her work and it’s really frustrating to me that she doesn’t just drop a line in her blog to acknowledge the scoring problems (because her team IS aware of them). It would be the right thing to do for all the people who supported her by buying her book.

(Also – not all of us are ladies!)

I’m sorry if this comes across as unfriendly to your comment – sometimes it’s hard to express the correct attitude in typed words.

    2. Anna says:
      December 18, 2015 at 7:24 am

The “highly accurate” and “scientific” bit is for sure tongue in cheek. There is no such thing as a scientific algorithm for personal style, it’s all subjective! These kinds of quizzes and categorizations should always be taken with a grain of salt, but they are a fun way to get some decorating inspiration and direction.

      1. Holey says:
        December 18, 2015 at 7:38 am

I realize it’s meant to be tongue-in-cheek, which would be fine if the quiz was correctly written (if subjective). But actually, the scoring is so messed up that it’s literally impossible to get certain styles. The problems with the scoring are definitely not subjective.

        1. Holey says:
          December 18, 2015 at 7:52 am

I guess what I mean to say is that, in this case, the tongue-in-cheek comment added insult to injury.

  23. BRITTANY says:
    December 10, 2015 at 5:29 pm

    Scandinavian please!!

  24. Anna says:
    December 10, 2015 at 5:43 pm

I own those boots and I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooove them! (So much so that I am afraid I’m going to wear them out because I’ve worn them pretty much every day since it got cold enough in Texas to wear socks, and last fall/winter too). I would happily live in a rustic home such as this (though I would likely add a few Scandinavian/bohemian touches).

  25. Astrid says:
    December 10, 2015 at 7:55 pm

    Scandinavian and MCM please!

  26. Kate Lim says:
    December 10, 2015 at 10:15 pm

    Contemporary or Minimalist!

  27. Elora says:

    PS. Great finds 🙂

Interior Design Blog by Emily Henderson

I started this interior design blog in 2010 as a journal of my style and home projects with the belief that design should be approachable, informational and accessible no matter what budget.

As a home style expert who has a strong commitment to peeling back the intimidating layers of the world of home decor, and showing how every person can have a beautiful home that represents their personality, no matter what the budget.

After styling for magazines and catalogues for years, I started my own interior design blog, won HGTV Design Star, and have gone on to host my own hit TV show Secrets from a Stylist, Author the book STYLED, and create the design firm Emily Henderson Design.

My motto has always been to write and publish on my blog what I personally want to read about.

My interior design blog remains personal, totally transparent and honest - documenting both proud and embarrassing design moments/mistakes and giving real life pricing and expectations.

I believe that your home should look like you, that every room is soul-less without something vintage or antique. I also believe in having fun. Like, a lot of fun.
